Hard, greedy, and ruthless, admiral Khasar-Gan was in many ways shaped by the harsh water planet Khar-Shalkhi, on which he was unlucky enough to be born. Cold, dark oceans cover most of the planet’s surface and its people are either seafarers or live in huge, floating port cities. Bleak as it may be, Khar-Shalkhi’s economy relies on the mining of valuable crystals from deep underwater caves. After a life of petty crime, thieving and peddling, Khasar-Gan managed to carve out a piece of the ocean for himself. He commands a small pirate fleet that mostly deals in raiding the ships of the mining companies and smuggling crystal dust to foreigners.
This concept was made as part of my Portfolio course at the Game Assembly. The Admiral was conceived as an enemy NPC for an RPG space opera. For this project, I dedicated a fair amount of time to research and worldbuilding before moving on to thumbnailing and sketching. I wanted to create a character design where a part of the challenge would entail making it fit neatly into my water planet setting, as this planet was to be explored further in another part of my portfolio.
